Sad news for the club as former player & Treasurer passes

It's with deep regret & a heavy heart that the club announce the passing of former player & current Club Treasurer Simon Miles on Sunday 4th October.

Words describing Simon have been kindly provided for by life friend, Nick Newbold:

“One of a handful of King Henry VIII pupils to play for the Old Wheats, Simon Miles was a true legend.

Whether he was picked for the 1st team or the 4th team Simon would give everything – both on the field and back in the bar afterwards.

He played anywhere and everywhere – always staying loyal to the cause. I was privileged to have played rugby at school and also for Wheat’s on many occasions with Simon and he was truly a great friend. Volunteering behind the bar, supporting the various committee’s and generally socialising was Simon’s game.

A club doesn’t function at all without such Trojan’s.

Smiles, Cobra (No Snake/No Tour) – you’ll be missed terribly by all – but never forgotten!”

Simon has been a mainstay around the club for the last 40yrs and he epitomises what an Old Wheat stands for. He is a regular on VP Day’s along with his family showing his support to the club both on the side of the pitch and within the bar, or bellowing out "How many times, ref?" in his jovial manner whilst sharing a laugh with his Wheats Old Boys, his friends. More recently, Simon joined the committee again as Treasurer which was welcomed by everyone involved in the club.

His son, Will, helps coach the Mini Wheats on a Sunday and Simon was a regular spectator every Sunday, donning his much loved Saints jersey and enjoying a bacon sarnie whilst smiling over the fields where he will forever be remembered.

In this tragic time, our thoughts and prayers go to Simons’ wife Jill, his children Hannah, Katie & Will along with his many friends and former teammates from the club - we are all thinking of you.

RIP Simon
