Wheat's win the local derby 17-10 to seal emphatic & hard fought victory!!

Not 10, 20 not 59 but 80mins was how long wheats played for this weekend and it's was a joy to watch.

Wheats managed to name a strong squad with Santa bringing 3 new players at Christmas. And all we're in line to make their debut until 20 mins before kick off when Jon Pavey pulled his hamstring and an emergency call went across the city to Marc Rubery who was helping out Old Coventrian’s 2s,

The game started with a kick off deep into OC’s half and 2 players player’s fumbled putting them under pressure in their 22,

Wheats had been guilty of not starting games for 20 mins or until they were 3 tries down this season but today was different.
Old Coventrian’s hadn't got out of their 22 for the first 20 mins with Wheats banging on the door in attack or exerting great pressure in D, the scrum was also fantastic driving them back and winning balls against the head.
A pen was given away outside the 22 Joe Boyle stepped up and it was 3 - 0.

More pressure was being exerted and some chances missed, Old Coventrian’s were getting more of the ball now but wheats tackling was ferrous with Tom Brown leading the way chopping down people 14 years his junior, and George browning putting in a very physical 40 mins.

Then the try came, Gaz Windsor got the ball and had options to pass to and he met Brad Pinkham with a pin point pass who bust over the line, Joe Boyle to convert.

With this OC’s made 2 changes to add more weight to their pack and even up the scrum,

The first half was wheats constantly playing in OC’s half but just failing to add to that score
HT 10-0.

At half time every player knew the job wasn't done and we knew Old Coventrian’s would come at us hard and they did from the kick off, a missed pass gave them great field position and forwards bundled themselves over the line but the conversion was missed.
After more a more even second half George browning showed great foot work to kick the ball into the opposing try area and touch down.
With Joe Boyle now off Gaz stepped up from 5 meters inside the touch line and slotted the kick,
17-5.
But Old Coventrian’s were not done and from the kick off knowing they had to reply quickly they then drove wheats off the ball and the forwards came up with another 5 points but the conversion was missed. 17-10.

Now the heart was really going 25 mins left one score in it OC’s had chances and half breaks but the tackling and covering was brilliant from wheats every ruck we made it hard and steeling turn overs Ben weaver doing this expertly,
The last play of the game saw Old Coventrian’s attack down the right side only for Paul Wright & Brad Pinkham to make the turn over and the ball be kicked out. Wheats win!

No man of the match was named but there was some incredible performances,
Ben Craig was a wrecking ball in attack taking 3 players with him every time he got the ball and a brick wall in defence.
Ben Weaver making his first league start of the season and playing like a true 7.
James Heath making his debut and doing the dirty work in and around the rucks.
Tom Brown, Bradley and George making the OC’s back line work hard all game and being solid in defence. Paul Wright had three separate cameos adding experience and “weight”.

I feel bad for missing people out because all on other days would have got a mention.

Dick of the day

Ollie Thorpe for possibly the worst box kick rugby has ever seen!

Training Wednesday 6.45pm - lets build on this!
