1st XV vs Atherstone (A) Midlands 4 WS

Rugby returned for the Wheats as we travelled to Atherstone for what is notoriously a difficult fixture.

Injuries and unavailability meant that we were travelling 7 or 8 short of full strength, including an entire front row. Faith was placed in the 20 man squad and the Wheats were confident that we would have enough.

Preparations were thrown further in to chaos when Charlie’s knees gave way under the extra weight in the warm up. So the team started;

Andy Hibberd making his 1st team bow this season in the front row along with Jack and Baz. Andy T and Wrighty snuggling tight in the row. And the back row was made up of Critch, Pace and Ben Hands.

Lowey, fresh from his debauched festive period partnered Rob T at half-back, Loachy and Kilian were in the centre. Bobby, Ross and SBS made up the back 3.

Sid, James T, Charlie Hands and Josh started from the bench – the latter turning up nice and early and prepared...............for the following week’s fixture. DICK.

The game itself was no surprise at all. Atherstone’s strong pack dominating the set piece and Wheats pacey backs making yards in the loose.

Wheats points came from Killer (2 tries), Ross H (1 try), SBS adding a penalty and conversion. Atherstone’s reply was a single try midway through the second half.

Not an amazing performance but a really good win to start 2012.
