Match Report: Bedworth 26 Wheats 21

Wheats lose for the first time in the league

After a wonderful start to Midlands 4 West (South) winning 7 from 7 with maximum points, the Wheats travelled the short distance to Bedworth on Saturday afternoon. With heavy rain all week the pitch was soft and muddy underfoot and this suited the home sides game plan. A cagey start to the game with mistakes from both sides. Wheats had majority of the possession but failing to make a dent in the Bedworth defence until Jamie Hutton got the ball in his hands. The speedy fullback received the ball just inside his own half and saw space behind his opposition. Hutton chipped over the on coming defenders and beat his opposite number to the ball where he kicked the ball on. Both players had a little tug on each others shirts to try gain the advantage. Hutton managed to win the foot race and dive on the ball right on the try line, unfortunately the fullbacks speed was to much for the referee as he could not award the try because he couldn't see if he had grounded the ball or not. Instead a penalty was awarded to the Wheats for the first pull back from Bedworth.

Bedworth started to build themselves into the game and gain some territory. Some good defence from both sides kept the scores to nil until top try scorer James Hancox broke multiple tackles to score under the sticks. Gareth Windsor added the 2. Bedworth then really put their game plan into action and dominated possession for long periods. Hard running from the home side put them 14-7 up at half time.

Wheats really weren't looking like the same team that had seen them dominate teams this season. Frustration throughout the team didn't help and the boys came out after the break with a bang, scoring the next 2 tries. James Przybek's quick tap from 10 metres out and Windsor's conversion put Wheats level. With around 15 minutes to go number 8 Charlie Hands broke his way through the defence and powered his way into Bedworth's 22 where he was supported by replacement flanker Andy Haughian who finished off a great score. Windsor added the 2.

Bedworth showed great determination to get themselves back in front and win the game in the final minutes.

WHEATS 21

A disappointing day at the office for the Wheats and this really showed with the reactions and disappointment shown by all the players at the end of the game. Major credit should go to Bedworth who ran and tackled hard. Their back row had great games and deserved to come out winners. The 2 sides meet for the 3rd time this season in the reverse fixture in March at the Stade.

Coaches Corner

You can't play well in every game but lessons need to be learnt from Saturday's performance. Bedworth were good value for the win. They wanted it more than us which was disappointing to see.
We must have given them the ball around 20 times throughout the game dropping simple passes, not securing set piece and losing the ball going into contact. These are the basic things that we need to cut out if we want to gain promotion, as in the league above we would of lost by a cricket score.

Lads need to step up at training and earn the shirt!

Matthew 'Cheeks' Cappell

Wheats will want to bounce back with a big performance when we welcome Bromyard to the Stade this Saturday.

WIN LOSE OR DRAW.... UP THE WHEATS!!!
