Wheats beaten for the first time this season

The Wheats welcomed Tenbury RFC to the Stade for the Quarter Final of the RFU Junior Vase on Saturday. Both teams came into the fixture with 100% records in all competitions. With £2 a pint on offer and a juicy cup tie, spectators arrived in numbers for both sides. Wheats started the stronger with pressure throughout the opening 5 minutes. Some great build up play allowed Wheats to gain metres into the 22. Scrum half Sam Eaton was allowed quick ball to play with and took a chance with a snipe from the bottom of the ruck. His chance paid off as he crashed over the line to score his first of the season and put Wheats on the score board. Gareth Windsor slotted the conversion, as the heavens opened.

7-0

A strange double sin binning followed the try. Flanker James Przybek and Tenbury’s No.12 had a very ‘minor’ disagreement off the ball and the referee opted to bin both players to confusion of the lads.

Wheats continued to cause Tenbury problems in attack and only took them another 5 or so minutes to score a second try of the game. Fullback Jamie Hutton received the ball out wide after some more excellent build up play. The speedster managed to dot down under the sticks to make the conversion an easy one for Windsor.

14-0

After the second score Tenbury started to grow into the game and create chances for themselves, which eventually resulted in a quick tap penalty that caught the Wheats napping, and the away side scored under the posts.

14-7

A very stop start final 15 minutes of the first half saw multiple penalties for both sides. Tenbury managed to score another try in the corner before a Gareth Windsor penalty saw the Wheats go into the break with a 5 point lead.

The second half was a penalty fest all over the field. Tenbury managed to take 3 points in the opening minutes of the half to bring the score to just 2 points. Wheats struggled to get hold of any decent ball possession that has seen them steamroll teams away this season. This was mainly down to a very interrupted half of rugby through penalties and knock ons. Wheats did manage to get hold of the pill and create a great try in the corner for teenager Lewis Faulkner. Some great hands from Huw Edwards, James Hancox and others found Jamie Hutton in space on the touchline. The fullback managed to get the ball away to Lewis Faulkner who sped away to dot down.

22-15

The game continued to be very messy and scrappy. Tenbury managed to bundle their way over the Wheats line after some intense pressure to set up a big finale!

22-20

For the final 10 minutes Wheats defended their line. After multiple scrums and line outs eventually Tenbury were awarded a penalty just outside the 22 in front of the posts. The Tenbury scrum half kept his nerves to slot the kick in the last seconds of the game to send his side through to the next round.

A bitterly disappointing end to the game for the Wheats! Disappointment throughout, as the boys feel they didn't play as well as they know they can. On another day the result could of been a lot different. All credit must go to Tenbury on a great game and performance. They stuck at it after conceding 2 early tries and put up the biggest test for the Wheats since last season. We wish them all the best for the rest of the competition and the season.

Coaches Corner

Defeats like Saturday are a hard pill to swallow. I have no problem by being beaten by a better team and I wish Tenbury luck in the future rounds of the cup.

I have spent the last few days trying to find the words to talk about the game but they seem to have escaped me. Some times the less said the better.
