Wheats suffer defeat

The Wheats travelled over to Burbage for the last game of 2018, in a top of the table clash. Burbage have been in great form and are still undefeated in the league so far this season. Wheats have only lost one themselves and this promised to be a great, tight game.

Unfortunately, for everyone involved the weather didn't play ball. In what can only be described as horrendous weather, really ruined the day and the game, especially for the travelling Wheats. With rain lashing down and basically sub zero temperatures the Wheats warm up was not very effective at all. This didn't show at the start of the 80 minutes as Wheats started strong. With plenty of hard running and small breaks Wheats managed to get into Burbage's 22 and win a handful of penalties. Wheats peppered the try line but with no such luck coming a way with a try. They eventually elected to take a shot at goal which Gareth Windsor slotted to put Wheats 3 up.

After Wheats took the lead, the game became very scrappy with knock ons all over the place , due to the weather. A sin binning for both sides for a minor scuffle of the back off a scrum. Burbage really showed why they are undefeated so far this season and played to their strengths. Their forwards had managed to score 2 good tries to take a healthy lead.

Wheats had a few openings through Charlie Hands and Tom Tombleson but were unable to register a score. The weather seemed to effect the Wheats boys and they really couldn't get into their usual pattern of play.

The second half was much of the same from both sides. Burbage managed to score a couple more tries through their strong forwards and pull further away on the scoreboard. With the final minutes approaching there were hardly any spectators left watching the game due to the weather becoming worse.

Final Score
Burbage 34
Wheats 3

Burbage came out deserving winners on the day and dealt with conditions far better than Wheats. Disappointing day for the Wheats but one they will learn from. The reverse fixture is scheduled for April, which both teams hope for better weather conditions. This could be a league decider if both teams continue their winning ways. We look forward to 2019 and successful year.

Apologises this match report is so late, with all the festivities and going abroad for Christmas I haven't had chance to put a report together until now!
