The visitors started fast and took the game by the scruff of the neck scoring 2 tries inside 10minutes. However sticking to an ingrained game plan the Wheats knew that they would be to strong for the opposition over the duration as they clawed there way back into the match. With the Old Wheatleyans pack dominating the Scrummage and loose it was only a matter of time before the backs capitalised on this dominance. With McCallum working his backs hard, he then found a gap for him self after a sublime offload from Thomason to glide over which he converted 10-7. Another try then followed from Hands after some great pressure and attacking play which at this early stage in the first half spelled the end for a huge Upton pack and team as the Wheats started to find hole after hole.
HT: 12-10
The second half saw the home side execute some fantastic attacking plays which stemmed from the tireless work of the pack. A try straight from the kick off showed the building dominance of the home team and it certainly did not stop their. Many of the strong crowd who watched the match commented that they were some of the best tries they had seen at the Coundon Road ground. Coach Jonathan Fitt commented "the handling was fantastic from all the players with 2 incredible offloads from one of our up and coming front rows Makhan Bhinder. The players are working really hard and they deserve huge praise for this victory. We are very lucky in that we have some great experience in the team which is allowing the younger players to flourish and we certainly do not fear anyone who we play against." Tries in the second half came from Brooks, Saunders (2), Drury, Rooke and McCallum (3 Conversions and a Penalty) to bring the score to 44-26 at the final whistle.
Coach Fitt concluded “Bedworth will be a different kettle of fish next week but we can go there with no fear as all the pressure is on them having come down from the league above last season. All the players are very excited about the challenge and we are very hopeful of an open, running game.”
FT: 44-26
The Wheats travel to Bedworth RFC next week with the 'Green Army' on a roll and no doubt looking forward to playing against the team that finished 3rd in last years competition. They are managed by a familiar face in Carl Rogers, who used to manage Pinley so we can expect the same exciting and expansive game from his current team ;)
